Chapter Seventeen

Grayson heard her footfalls padding carefully down the hallway out toward him. The top stair creaked. While he was still angry at the siblings, he found it amusing that she thought she could sneak down without him noticing. It also reminded him just how little she’d adjusted to having access to her wolf senses.

He waited until she hit the bottom step. “Ready to talk?”

She didn’t speak, instead continued to creep into the room. He looked up from where he’d been working at the table, taking a slow perusal of her frame. Fresh from a shower, she’d changed into a massively oversized sweater that slumped off her left shoulder, showing off the marks from him and his wolf. She’d hooked the opposite side of the sweater onto a pair a tiny shorts and if she hadn’t done that, he’d have thought she didn’t have anything on underneath.

It had to be intentional on her part, especially since she still hadn’t said anything. He pointed to the seat across from him with his pen. “Sit. You may be tempting as fuck, but it’s not going to distract me.”

Her shoulders slumped, the sweater dipping dangerously low over her breast. Definitely intentional.

“Are you going to try to lie to me again?”

Amelia shook her head.

Grayson folded his arms over his chest and leaned back in his chair. “Then I want you to tell me what the fuck that was.”

“I—” she cleared her throat. He could feel the table wiggling from the rapid bouncing of her knee. “I don’t really know.”

“The two of you had it out to the point that I could physically feel you freaking out, and you don’t know what it was about?”

Her anxious motions stilled. “No. That’s not it. It was about family shit, but I don’t know where it came from.”

He narrowed his gaze. Though she couldn’t keep her eyes focused on his, she kept flicking back to look. Her pupils kept shifting between human and wolf as she struggled with which side would take the lead. “Tell me your side of it.”

“You talked to Luke already?” she asked, sitting straighter. He thought he saw a flash of worry, like she was bracing for him to believe Luke over her. That stung more than he wanted to admit.

Grayson pressed his lips together, not answering her. He had, in fact, talked to Luke and wasn’t sure how he felt about her brother’s version of events. He wanted to hear what his mate had to say and see how the two sides fit together, even then he already knew he’d side with Amelia.

She picked at the end of her braid. “He came in to tell me he’d applied for the job. He startled me and I guess didn’t get the reaction he wanted about the news. It annoyed him. Then he wanted to talk about our family stuff…”

He wanted to wrap her in his arms when she trailed off. Slight echoes of her hurt and discomfort niggled at him but he made himself stay still, waiting for her to finish.
